White House Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the start of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.
Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Legal Challenges
Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, unions sought a court injunction to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.
An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.
Impact on Workers
These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the end of the previous month but not the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.
Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
