As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
