The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
